Today I want to talk about how “authors” and “writing” in general have been affected by new technology. Consider the following: Humanity has come from a complete oral tradition where all knowledge and experience was committed to memory and some paintings on cave walls. Any transmission of knowledge or experience or news was in one way or another from person to person. The narrator may not have seen the events first hand but with the exchange of stories or knowledge there was person to person contact, eye contact and body language could be observed.

Then a very radical step away from that occurred – languages were turned into writing. Suddenly you didn’t have the person to person contact with the delivery of the story. It was between you and the paper (or whichever medium the words were written on). The whole sensual experience was missing.

Writers are now trying to take narratives and story telling to mobile phones, SMS and the Internet. Read the rest of this entry »

Building Healthy Self Esteem

During the past week I talked about the importance of having good self esteem, the areas of our lives that get affected by poor self esteem and why we have a responsibility to build our self esteem to the best possible level.

Now let us have a look at what steps we can take to build our self esteem. As with everything worthwhile, it takes time, patience and perseverance. It took years to get you to the place where you are now, so it will take a while to build solid self esteem. The journey will be worthwhile and all along you will feel better about yourself.

Who is our worst enemy? The answer might surprise you – it is ourselves, we are our own worst enemy. How? Through negative self talk. Most of the things we say to ourselves on a constant, daily basis are worse than the things we say to people we really dislike.

Here are 10 basic steps to build your self esteem:

  1. make a commitment to consciously and conscientiously build your self esteem
  2. start monitoring you self talk
  3. every time you become aware of saying negative things to yourself, just stop
  4. make a list of the most common negative phrases you say to yourself
  5. for each negative phrase find a constructive replacement phrase
  6. make sure the phrases are short, clear and in the present tense
  7. when you become aware of any negative self talk:  stop and then replace the negative phrase with the constructive one you have come up with
  8. persevere and don’t create more negative self talk when you occasionally forget
  9. seek help if it all seems to difficult
  10. enrol yourself in a self esteem course

Most of all, enjoy your journey!

In our last Self Esteem post, we mentioned that Dr Joe Rubino (author of the Self Esteem Book) is currently offering a Free mp3 audio: 7 Steps to Soaring Self-Esteem – It is an excellent recording and highly recommended.

Till next time,

Connie and Charly

Today Charly and I talked to Lilo Kunz who is a Bodytalk practitioner and BodyTalk Access teacher. BodyTalk is an energy healing modality that bridges the gap between western medical expertise and ancient eastern healing wisdom to effectively help support the body’s own ability to heal itself.

About 1995 Dr. John Veltheim came up with the Bodytalk concept and it has been evolving and growing ever since.
BodyTalk Access is a “healthcare package” – 5 powerful energy techniques. These techniques empower everybody, anywhere to help themselves, their families and communities to better health, more clarity and peace of mind. They are also a tool for emergency situations.

It is very popular in Asia, Europe, the USA  and South Africa. In Australia it is just starting to emerge even though Dr. John Veltheim originally came from Brisbane. He now lives in the USA.

To find out more about Dr. John Veltheim and to learn one of the basic and most commonly used techniques called the “Cortices” technique, go to http://bodytalksystem.com and watch the videos on that site. You also can find out about courses whether there is a  practitioner in your area. Read the rest of this entry »

Low Self Esteem – How Does it Affect Us?

By Connie On June 8th, 2009 in Mind & Body Connection /

Nobody really wants to have low self esteem, it is a very unpleasant situation to be in. Most people who have low self esteem are painfully aware of it and would like nothing more than to get themselves out of this situation. Yet, a lot of people who I come in contact with don’t seem to realise how many areas of their life are adversely affected by low self esteem. In my opinion low self esteem is incredibly pervasive and it affects everything we do and experience in life.

Most people have some idea or awareness where their low self esteem originated. Often they carry a lot of anger and resentment towards the people (usually parents or teachers) who they think caused them to be the way they are.  Carrying anger and resentment is unhealthy and stops you from moving forward, no matter how justified this anger seems. It is your responsibility to fix the problem, to “break the cycle”, so your children don’t end up with the same problems.

Low self esteem starts in babyhood, as soon as a parent frowns at the baby or raises his/her voice, the baby’s sense of “self” gets threatened and the feeling of “not being good enough” starts to embed itself. These are pre verbal memories and this is why they are very difficult to deal with. As time progresses we get exposed to more self esteem damaging people and slowly we start to believe that we are not good enough, that our opinion is not worthwhile, that we will never amount to anything much…..

So, how does low self esteem affect us, often in ways we don’t even realise? It has been linked to:

  • depression and general unhappiness
  • violent behaviour
  • anger
  • poor academic performance
  • choosing the wrong career
  • poor career progression
  • getting “mixed up” with the “wrong crowd” because of peer pressure
  • drug and alcohol abuse
  • having a succession of bad relationships
  • feeling socially awkward or inadequate

I think that our self esteem is one the most crucial factors affecting our whole life. It is absolutely important to build good, healthy esteem to have a happy and fulfilled life.

Dr Joe Rubino (author of the Self Esteem Book) is currently offering a Free mp3 audio: 7 Steps to Soaring Self-Esteem – an excellent way to improve and maintain your own Self Esteem.

Till next time,

Connie and Charly

Anything Is Possible If You Put Your Mind To It!

I want to share a story with you, a real life story that shows that anything is possible, if you put your mind to it. With this story I also want to encourage you to start writing. You may think that it is not interesting what you have to say. I am sure you know something that soemone else wants to know about or somebody else is interested in.

I met Richard today, a delightful volunteer in a thrift shop who had a stack of two different children’s book sitting on the counter  in front of him. I found out that they were his books, he had written them just recently. When he approached a publisher with his first one he was told that it wouldn’t sell, that it was too Australian. He took it elsewhere and so far has sold 1500 copies!

BUT the most remarkable thing about the whole story is that Richard was illiterate for 63 years of his life. He went to the local college and started learning to read and write.  Within 3 years he became an author.

Check out his website and get the full details of his story at:

We are pleased we were able to interview Lenore Miller once more -now you have chance to listen to her talk. Her energy, enthusiasm and passion are contagious!

Lenore talked about creating an outrageously healthy life for yourself – don’t put it off till you lose that weight or till you feel better – start today by looking at things you can be grateful for or happy about.

Lenore offers an mp3 called “Feeling Great for No Good Reason” on her site, go and get it here:  http://stretchyourmindandbody.com/blog/outrageoushealth

Everything starts with a decision first – decide to become healthy and then create a toolbox for yourself that will help you along the way. One of the items in your toolbox should be the ability to create positive questions. Instead of asking – “Why am I so fat?” ask yourself something like: “What is great about today?” This will change your focus.

To help you along Lenore has made an incredibly generous offer. The first 10 people to listen to the call will get a free consultation with Lenore! Just email Lenore at:  lenore@outrageouslyhealthy.com and mention this show!

What is a Brand?

By Connie On June 3rd, 2009 in Business building /

At the outset this may seem to be a very basic and simple question. When asked we all can name some brands, usually the ones we grew up with come to mind first. Some brands have been around for a long time. For some, their colours and logos never changed. People remember them from one generation to the next.

Occasionally brands have become synonymous with the object – just think of hoover and hoovering – the brand became one with the vacuum cleaner and became part of the colloquial English language.

We are exposed to over 3000 branded messages a day. Apparently we only notice about 80 out of those and then we only react to about 10. Reacting can simply mean to just give it a brief thought or comment, it doesn’t mean acting on it and buying the product. Read the rest of this entry »

Self Esteem – What Does it Mean to You?

Loading ... Loading ...

When I started writing about self esteem and teaching “self confidence building” classes a number of years ago, I thought about what self esteem actually is. I came up with a number of things which I believe are all part of having healthy self esteem:

  • feeling good about yourself
  • liking yourself
  • loving yourself
  • being able to stand up for yourself
  • being assertive
  • being compassionate with yourself
  • being nice to yourself
  • appreciating your good qualities
  • acknowledging your skills and talents
  • being able to accept complements gracefully
  • being able to say sorry
  • being able to own your mistakes and simply saying: “Yes, I made a mistake”. Read the rest of this entry »
