How To Write a Resume That Will Stand Out and Get Noticed
Today we spoke to Laura Whitlelaw, an expert resume writer from

The first thing to remember is the fact that potential employers are inundated with resumes. They only scan the resumes and you got about 10-30 seconds to get noticed – so a very targetted and professionally written resume is of utmost importance.
You need to position yourself and highlight your unique skills and experiences. Match them up with your potential employer’s needs. It is like writing a virtual sales letter for yourself.
To make yourself “employable” and “desirable” there are a number of steps you can take:
• Begin with the end in mind. What do want to achieve? Have different resumes for different purposes.
• Upgrade your skills if necessary
• Give yourself a title (derived from the job you are doing at the moment)
• Use 4-5 sentences to show how and why you can be valuable to you potential employer (this is a bit like a sales pitch)
• Talk about your accomplishments, the things you have achieved in the past
• Put keywords and phrases throughout your resume so a data scanner will pick it up when those keywords are searched for
• Use action verbs at the beginning of your sentences
• Scatter some testimonials through your resume – they can be excerpts from past references or job review reports etc.
• Use interesting fonts and bolding but don’t go “overboard” either
• Don’t use personal pronouns in resume
