Pilates – A Complete Mind and Body Experience

Pilates (pronounced Pi-LOT-eez) is considered a mind and body exercise. It originated with a man named Joseph Pilates back in the early 20th Century. He was a German national living in England; he was also a boxer and performer. He had studied and apprenticed in learning yoga and Zen exercise techniques, as well as learning about the physical training regimens practiced in ancient Rome and Greece. He developed a set of exercise and invented special machines on which to do them. When he was interned at a camp during World War I, he began showing his fellow internees the exercises. After the war, he and his wife, Clara (a nurse), incorporated the exercises to help injured and ill patients. Much of the machinery remains the same today, and home videos offer simple exercises in Pilates that do not make use of the machines, or use bands to help imitate the use of machines.

One of the main focuses of Pilates is to work with balance, and with strengthening the core inner muscles of the abdomen and the back. However, there are Pilates exercises to strengthen every muscle in the body. Concentration on holding specific poses and working certain muscles ensures that you become stronger, helping you burn more calories and tone your body. Additionally, breathing is important in Pilates, as it helps you maintain your focus. As you do Pilates, you will notice similarities to yoga in some of the movements and concepts.

When one practices Pilates regularly, it yields many benefits. Increased lung capacity, from the steady, deep breaths that one takes as one exercises is one of these benefits. Circulation is also improved. Strength and flexibility are gained, as well as balance, posture, and strength in the body’s core. Pilates can also help build bone density and improve the health of one’s joints. Mental benefits include an increased awareness of body, stress relief, feelings of well-being, more energy, and sharper thinking skills.

While many people go to the gym to work on machines with professional instructors, it is also possible to receive some of the benefits at home. Poses and exercises done sitting, standing, or laying down can help you increase strength and balance. However, you should be careful when doing the exercises at home with a video or DVD. You might sustain injury if you do not do the exercises correctly. Working with a trainer initially and then moving to doing exercises in your home can help you get an idea of the proper way to exercise, and allow you to do so on your own without sustaining hurt.

Pilates has been used among sports trainers and by dancers for years. It is only recently that it has been widely used among the public. Additionally, some of the techniques are used in physical therapy and rehabilitation, as the resistance can help patients regain strength and balance. Because of its focus on mindfulness of the body, and because of its ability to increase mental alertness, Pilates is considered a mind-body exercise program. However, unlike yoga, tai chi, and Zen practices, it does not have a spiritual element.

Consider Spirituality in Developing Self Confidence

Our development is continuous from the moment we were conceived until the last seconds of our stay.

Nothing comes from nothing. And everything will eventually go to nothing. But unless we have turned into void everything would still be subject to improvement. If we have missed in childhood all the developments we were bound to undergo then adulthood is never too late to give them a shot. All it would take is to gather everything in one heap and toss them all in one try with fingers crossed hoping that all would end well. 

The end is never the end of it all though. Depending on your treatment of things, the end might as well be considered as the beginning. The start of a new trial.

All we need is to take the positive attitude and make ourselves believe that some things are meant to fail on our first trials and then luck would follow us.

Our route for development is always towards a specific goal. And since nothing comes from nothing, it is unarguable that we were innately confident. We were all entitled to confidence  unless we turn away from this gift, which by the way is the normal reaction of most people who have failed on their initial shot.

Self confidence roots from our inner drive to excel, to show the world how well a man should treat life and how to manipulate the attributes that one is endowed with.

From our birth comes the weak foundation of our inner self confidence. We are then responsible of intensifying this fortress as we age. Being unable to do so is a form of disregard towards the precious gifts that accompany self confidence. 

If you failed to develop your self confidence as a child then think of it as a loss that you must learn from. Now, all you have to do is to muster all strength so you can start anew. You have a lifetime to change the course of your life, you have been given all the stock you need to get your world moving. Only if you would realize how beautiful your blueprints are then you could appreciate the worth you have.

If being you, as the created manifestation of God’s love is not enough for to convince you of how worthy you are, then think only of this- God took time to conceptualize everything that you are now.

Imagine, the Divine Being gave you the favor of His eternity. Then you, the creature would put all these to waste because you had failures that you cant get over with? Because you had failures that let you see the imperfections you created for yourself? Because your failures caused you to be less confident of your own beauty? Think again. Heap all your memories and let the best times shine and you will see how wonderfully you were created.

If you do not believe in all these then you might come to realize that for your own sake and happiness, you have to encourage yourself and continue the development that has for long been stunted.

Developing self confidence is never that hard to do if you truly believe that you can develop. The problem though is that you are creating too many walls against yourself and the development even before you have started your attempts. These walls would not only hamper you to see the other side of yourself but would also cause you not to jump over your present negative domain.

Tried and True Techniques on How to Reduce Stress

Stress is a part of everyday life. However, it can become overwhelming after a prolonged period of time. The better we handle stress, the more balanced our life will be. Here are some techniques on how to reduce stress.

Manage Your Work

Work can sometimes get to us, and the only way to reduce stress is to face it. Avoid putting off work because you are thinking of what to do next. Instead, write down what you need to get done and divide it into manageable parts. When you start finishing your work part by part, you’ll no longer worry as much.

Also make a priority list. Sometimes it’s just not possible to do everything in one day. Thinking about how to fit an impossible number of tasks in a day will only stress you out, slow you down and waste your time. Try to put more effort into more important tasks.

Take A Break

Give your entire body a beak. A popular technique is to take a deep breath, count to 10 and release slowly. Stand up from time to time and give your body a good stretch. This will release some tense muscles. Take a power nap, since a tired body cannot handle stress as well as when it is more energized. If you’ve been stressed for a really long time, perhaps it’s time to take a vacation.

Give your mind a break and reward yourself when you complete a certain amount of work. Have a nice cup of coffee or watch something on TV for a while. No matter what you do, take your focus somewhere else. This way when you get back to work, your mind will feel refreshed. Taking even just a 15-minute break for can reduce stress considerably.

If you absolutely must complete your work, delegate! There’s nothing wrong with asking for help. You can ask someone to do your work or other chores that are low-priority. This way you have some burden taken off your shoulders.

Try Yoga

Yoga has been used for health benefits for more than 5000 years. Yoga involves stretching through different poses and controlled breathing. It is known to have a positive effect psychologically and reduce stress. The best thing about yoga is you can do it almost anywhere. You can get a DVD for beginners or join a class at the gym.

Exercise

Exercise benefits both physical and mental health. It includes cardiovascular training, strength training and stretching. When we exercise, our body releases chemicals called endorphins. These are also called happy chemicals, since these naturally make us feel good.

Eat Well

Never underestimate the power of food. If we eat the right ones, we’ll be able to reduce stress naturally. Bodies that are well nourished are known to have better coping capabilities when it comes to stress. Begin your day with a healthy breakfast and maintain your energy levels throughout the day with nutritious and balanced meals.

As you can see there are immediate ways as well as long-term solutions to reduce stress. It’s all in the matter of you taking the first step and really being proactive about getting some peace of mind. Treat both your body and mind to achieve that great quality life you’ve always wanted.

The Age Defying Benefits of Mind and Body Exercise for Baby Boomers

As a 58 year old Baby Boomer, having always been very aware of growing old and having lived in one of the most prosperous and technically advanced times the world has ever known, I am absolutely abhorred to see how many of my fellow Baby Boomers appear to struggle with their health and their weight when I walk in the shopping centres and streets of Brisbane, Australia. Many of us seem to overlook the fact that bad health and obesity really speeds up the aging process and makes you look and feel many years older than you really are.

Since serving in the Dutch Royal Marine Corps Special Forces as a young man, I have always looked upon life as a never ending battle; a battle of the mind over the body and vice versa. Fighting the aging process in the body is also a never ending battle and demands a balanced mind, time, effort and common sense.

In the Special Forces courses of the SAS, Royal Marines SBS and Navy SEALS it becomes very apparent in the first few days of the course that the only way you are going to ever pass is to teach your mind to control your body. The other way around and you are sure to fail the course.

The same principle applies in every day life.

Our body and our mind are intricately linked through our energy or meridian systems; when either one is weak or out of balance the other suffers. In fact, our emotions are so strongly connected to our physical being that they can elicit tangible physical responses and vice versa. (And this becomes very evident in the SBS/SEAL training).

Richard Gerber (1988), author of “Vibrational Medicine” goes even further by suggesting that physical disease may actually begin at the energy level and then eventually shows up in the physical body. Because science has discovered that everything in our world and universe is made of energy, including ourselves, and that it is energy that connects us to each other and everything else in our world, Richard Gerber’s suggestion tends to make sense.

Being able to balance your energy meridians in your body in conjunction with your mind is an important step forward in the process of slowing down the ageing process and to regain better emotional and physical health. In order to do so however, you need to learn and then apply the Energy Psychology techniques of EFT and apply regular short burst mind-body exercises in your life. Only then will you be able to help yourself overcome self sabotaging thoughts and cravings to control your weight.

The problem is that most of us Baby Boomers (including the younger generations) are close minded and too concerned about the TIME and physicalility factor; with that I mean; we don’t want to make the time and we feel we are physically not able to exercise because it is too demanding on the body.

The secret then to the age defying benefits of mind and body exercise for Baby Boomers is to overcome these barriers of time and physicality hangups by incorporating regular, short bursts of mind and body exercises and routines in your day. Two minute, five minute, ten minute routines to get the body moving again and the sub-conscious mind overlayered with a set of new emotional habits and thinking patterns.

If you want to control your weight and look and feel sexy again despite being a middle-aged Baby Boomer or older; if you want to address your fears, insecurities and perhaps your demons of the past, then the first step for you to take is to start at the top of your head (your mind) and literally tap into your own Energy system (your body) by using your finger tips thereby affecting every body system and contributing more to your overall health and longevity than any pill or diet ever will.

Only a sick body and a weary and troubled mind will force you into old age well before your time.

It’s time for a change and only you can do it.
