Building Healthy Self Esteem
During the past week I talked about the importance of having good self esteem, the areas of our lives that get affected by poor self esteem and why we have a responsibility to build our self esteem to the best possible level.
Now let us have a look at what steps we can take to build our self esteem. As with everything worthwhile, it takes time, patience and perseverance. It took years to get you to the place where you are now, so it will take a while to build solid self esteem. The journey will be worthwhile and all along you will feel better about yourself.
Who is our worst enemy? The answer might surprise you – it is ourselves, we are our own worst enemy. How? Through negative self talk. Most of the things we say to ourselves on a constant, daily basis are worse than the things we say to people we really dislike.
Here are 10 basic steps to build your self esteem:
- make a commitment to consciously and conscientiously build your self esteem
- start monitoring you self talk
- every time you become aware of saying negative things to yourself, just stop
- make a list of the most common negative phrases you say to yourself
- for each negative phrase find a constructive replacement phrase
- make sure the phrases are short, clear and in the present tense
- when you become aware of any negative self talk: stop and then replace the negative phrase with the constructive one you have come up with
- persevere and don’t create more negative self talk when you occasionally forget
- seek help if it all seems to difficult
- enrol yourself in a self esteem course
Most of all, enjoy your journey!
In our last Self Esteem post, we mentioned that Dr Joe Rubino (author of the Self Esteem Book) is currently offering a Free mp3 audio: 7 Steps to Soaring Self-Esteem – It is an excellent recording and highly recommended.
Till next time,
