Where Do I Start To Achieve Work-Life Balance?
As I was typing this heading it struck me that the term “work-life” balance somehow seems to apply that there is “work” on one hand and “life” on the other hand. When we are working we are not living? Work and Life are totally opposing concepts? I hope this doesn’t apply to you. Remember – the most valuable commodity you have is time. Once you used it up, once you spent it, it is gone forever. You can make more money, you can acquire more possessions but you cannot replenish time.
For any project you plan, you need to start with the end in mind. What I mean is: you need to work out where you want your body and mind to be and where you want your business to be in 4 weeks, 3 months, 6 months and 12 months from now.
Remember – even the longest journey starts with the idea to undertake it. Most importantly, it starts with the FIRST step. This is the crucial part – to take that first step and then keep taking one step at a time. Have a big vision and then set realistic smaller goals. Don’t set you goals so high that you are programming yourself to fail.
One trick I learnt is: Write a “To do” list in the evening for the next day. Put the 3 or 4 most important things on top. Things that simply can’t be put off, like paying a bill, taking the children to school, making an appointment, attending an appointment etc. Also add things like 10 minutes of relaxation or meditation, some stretches and something you need to do to improve your business. Then continue to add things – most probably your list will be really long.
Now – get a pair of scissors and cut that list in half. Start to work through the top half and if you really have some time left, start on the second half.
The next day, revise the “cut off” half from the day before, again put the 3 or 4 most important things to the top of your list……
See how you go, we hope this was useful.
